White Mask Varre is the first NPC you interact with when you start Elden Ring. During my first playthrough, I thought he was just another character with no importance to the game, but I was wrong!
During my second playthrough, I discovered that Varre can assign you a quest. As a reward for his quest, you get access to one of the best rune-farming locations early in the game. You also get access to Mohgwyn Palace – the abode of one of the fiercest bosses in Elden Ring, Mohg, Lord of Blood.
However, I recommend not fighting Mohg if you are anything below level 100; he can kill you in a few attacks. 🤐
So, in this Elden Ring guide, I will show you how to trigger Varre’s quest, finish the charged tasks in offline mode [you’ll know why I said that in a minute], get maidens’ blood for Varre’s quest, and collect the rewards.
How to Get Maidens’ Blood for Varre’s Quest?
To get maidens’ blood for Varre’s quest, you must visit one of the three locations: Church of Inhibition, Chapel of Anticipation, or Irina in Weeping Peninsula.
However, before you get the maidens’ blood, you must do some tasks and collect an item called Lord of Blood’s Favor. So, let’s complete White Mask Varre’s questline step-by-step.
Meet Varre for the First Time
This meeting is inevitable as you anyhow stumble upon Varre in Limgrave after exiting the Stranded Graveyard. This is where he offers you guidance and taunts you for being maidenless.
To begin Varre’s questline, you must first defeat a Demigod and collect a Great Rune. Godrick, the Grafted, is the earliest Demigod in the game that you can defeat to collect a Great Rune.
Once you have collected the Great Rune, return to the First Step site of grace and talk to Varre again. He will direct you to go to Roundtable Hold and talk to Enia. It is crucial that you acquire an audience at the Roundtable Hold. Otherwise, the questline won’t proceed.
Talk to Varre at Rose Church (Liurnia of the Lakes)
Once you have talked with Enia, Varre will move to Rose Church (Liurnia of the Lakes) and will be waiting for you outside the church gates. Trigger a conversation with him, and he’ll congratulate you for claiming a Great Rune and acquiring an audience at the Roundtable Hold.
He will ask your opinions on the Two Fingers, and you get a dialogue option to choose from:
✅ They didn’t seem right
❌ They were magnificent
If you choose the second option, Varre will get offended and ask you to leave. However, you can just return to him, talk to him again, and choose the “They didn’t seem right” dialogue option this time.
Once the right dialogue option is chosen, he will gift you 5X Festering Bloody Finger. If you’re playing online, use these fingers to invade at least three player worlds to proceed in Varre’s questline.
However, if you are playing Elden Ring offline like I am, just go to the next step.
Fight NPC Magnus the Beast Claw in Writheblood Ruins
Prior to patch 1.06, to complete Varre’s quest, you had to use the Festering Bloody Fingers and invade three worlds. You don’t need to win the fights; you can invade and return to the world.
However, you must play Elden Ring online to invade other players’ worlds. So, what about the players who play offline? This was solved in patch 1.06, and offline players were given an alternative way to complete Varre’s quest.
Go to Writheblood Ruins in the Altus Plateau. The location lies west of the Bridge of Iniquity site of grace. Here, you will find an NPC invader (not a player invader) who you must defeat.
Inside the ruins, you will find an invasion sign. Examine it and invade the Magnus, the Beast Claw’s world.
Ensure you have a good armor set on and a strong Bleed weapon to kill Magnus easily. Otherwise, he is a beefy opponent who can kill you with his range attacks.
I had Malenia, the Blade of Miquella’s armor set on, and as a weapon, I had one of the most powerful katanas in the Elden Ring, the Rivers of Blood.
After killing Magnus, the Beast Claw, you will receive a Rune Arc and Furlcalling Finger Remedy. When you return to your world, you will also receive Great Stars (Magnus’s weapon) and Somber Smithing Stone [6].
Collect Lord of Blood’s Favor from Varre at Rose Church
Return to Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes to talk to Varre again. This time, he will ask you to be anointed as a knight. You get the option to accept it or refuse it.
To complete White Mask Varre’s questline, you have to accept the proposal. So, select the “Anoint me” option.
Varre will assign the last task to him, i.e., soak the Lord of Blood’s favor in a maiden’s blood. Since the player is maidenless, the blood of any maiden would do.
Get the Maiden’s Blood for Varre’s Quest
To soak the Lord of Blood’s favor in the maiden’s blood, you can go to any of the three locations:
- Church of Inhibition: The closest location for a maiden corpse. The maiden is located inside the ruined church at the top of the Frenzied Flame Village, northeast part of the Liurnia of the Lakes region.
- Chapel of Anticipation: This is the starting point of the game. Using the middle waygate in the Four Belfries location (which you also need to go to for the Imbued Stone Keys), you can teleport to the Chapel of Anticipation.
You’ll have to fight the Grafter Scion (which will bring back memories 🥺) and then head to the Chapel. You’ll find a maiden corpse lying there. This image is from when I fought this nasty enemy before doing Varre’s quest.
- Irina in Weeping Peninsula: This is the easiest way to get the maiden’s blood for Varre’s quest, but for that, you have to kill Irina, who is already gasping her last breaths. So, if you don’t care about morals or ethics, you can do this.
You can go to any of the locations you please and get the maiden’s blood for the Varre’s quest. Once you do, return to Varre at Rose Church and give him the soaked Lord of the Blood’s favor.
Once you return the blood-soaked favor to Varre, he will anoint you as a knight and reward you with a Pureblood Knight’s Medal.
Kill Varre at Dynasty Mausoleum
Use the Pureblood Knight’s Medal to enter Mohgwyn Palace, a secret underground location.
When you teleport at the Mohgwyn Palace, run straight and take a left. You will enter the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum. This location is considered one of the best rune-farming locations in Elden Ring.

You will find a lot of enemies on your way and a lot of collectible items. If you want to fight them and farm runes, you can do that. However, I decided to keep moving forward.
You need to enter this dark room on the west side of Mohgwyn Palace. I suggest you have a lantern or a torch before you enter this place because it is really dark inside.
If you don’t have a torch, remember that you can always get one from Merchant Kale in Elden Ring!
Enter the room and navigate your way to the other end of the room. You will find the Mohgwyn Dynasty Midpoint site of grace. Activate it and put it on the map.
Return to the cave and find an invasion message in red. Examine the message and invade the White Mask Varre’s world.
White Mask Varre will ambush you in the dark, so keep your guard up. He is pretty easy to finish off if you use a powerful katana like Rivers of Blood or a greatsword like Blasphemous Blade.
Upon defeating Varre, you will receive a Furlcalling Finger Remedy and a Rune Arc. After collecting the rewards, you will return to your world.
When you return to your world, Varre is gasping his last breaths. Exhaust his dialogues, and he will die. You will get his weapons as rewards, i.e., a Festering Bloody Finger and Varre’s Bouquet.
Varre’s Bouquet scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity, and Arcane. It is a good weapon for blood loss buildup.

Final Thoughts
White Mask Varre is truly an interesting character in Elden Ring, and so is his quest.
In fact, there’s a conspiracy theory among Elden Ring players that he is the one who killed your maiden before the start of the game, and that’s why he knows you are maidenless, even when you are seeing and talking to him for the very first time at the beginning of the game.
Maybe he did that so we are bound to listen to what he says and do what he asks us to do. So, this theory does make sense to me. Does it make sense to you?
Surely, Elden Ring is one of the best story-driven games we have seen this century.
