Malenia is one of the Shardbearers in Elden Ring. She is a demigod and one of the important characters in the world of Elden Ring.
Many Soulslike gamers have claimed that Malenia is FromSoftware’s hardest boss. And we are talking about a company that has given us titles like Dark Souls and Sekiro.
If that doesn’t quiver you, wait till you meet Malenia in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree.
Although Malenia is an optional Boss, killing her would give you Hand of Malenia (one of the best katanas in Elden Ring), a Great Rune, and 480,000 Runes. That’s why most players go on a scavenger hunt to fight one of the game’s toughest bosses.
Malenia’s location – Miquella’s Haligtree – is hidden in the game. You need to find two halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion, then hoist the Medallion at the gates of Grand Lift of Rold. This act will lead you to the Hidden Path to Haligtree.
But that’s only half the adventure!
To get to Malenia, you need to find a map fragment, solve a puzzle, fight some mages, and kill some minor bosses as well. Only then can you step into the arena with the Malenia The Severed.
So, let’s begin with this adventurous guide on how to get to Malenia!
The Origins of Malenia The Severed
Malenia has a kind of sad origin story that she shares with her twin brother – Miquella.
Long before the events of The Shattering, Queen Marika splits herself into two beings – the female part being Marika and the male part being Radagon. The details of why Marika did so are not known.
Radagon left Marika to marry Queen Rennala, but after a while, he came back to Marika, and they produced two children – Miquella (boy) and Malenia (girl). As these children were offsprings of a God, they were born as Empyreans.
But since they’re born from a single God, both the children were born afflicted. Malenia was born with Scarlet Rot, and Miquella was cursed with eternal childhood. Malenia’s Scarlet Rot devastated her from within and cost her several limbs. She was further trained by a blind swordsman in the ways of the blade, allowing her to gain wings of unparalleled strength.
Due to her strength and power, Malenia became an important character in The Lands Between. She attracted the loyal servitude of Cleanrot Knights. She is worshipped by Kindred of Rot, her unwanted children, as a Goddess.
Malenia and Miquella shared a close bond, Miquella did everything in his power to cure his sister of her Scarlet Rot, but he couldn’t do it. Malenia would become her brother’s sworn blade and protector.
Since Miquella was unable to find a cure for Malenia, he created a needle of unalloyed gold that could keep the Scarlet Rot ravaging Malenia’s body at bay.
How to Find the Two Halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion?
If you want to know where Malenia is in Elden Ring, here’s a simple answer: Malenia is located in a sacred region known as Miquella’s Haligtree, which is in the far north of the Consecrated Snowfield – a hidden location in Forbidden Lands.
Since it’s a hidden location, you have to collect a few items, kill some bosses, solve a puzzle, and unlock the Malenia location.
Let’s find the two halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion.
➡️ Location 1: Village of Albinaurics (Right Half of Medallion)
You will find the right half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion in the Village of Albinaurics in Liurnia of the Lakes region.
See the red spot below on the map. That’s where you have to go. The region is northwest of the starting region of Limgrave. Prioritize finding the map fragment for this area so you can easily navigate the region.
Touch the Village of Albinaurics site of grace to get it on the map and head east.
You will reach an area with a collection of pots. There’s a pot that is not actually a pot but an NPC named Albus. Attack that pot, and Albus will break his disguise.
After a brief talk, Albus will give you the right half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion.
On your left, you will see a bridge. The bridge will lead you to a boss fight with the area boss – The Omenkiller. The fight is optional, so it’s on you whether you want to do it or not.
Defeating the Omenkiller will give you the Crucible Knot Talisman, which reduces the damage and impact of headshots.
➡️ Location 2: Castle Sol (Left Half of Medallion)
You will find the left half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion in the Castle Sol in the Mountaintops of the Giants region.
Once you are in the region, head North by mounting on Torrent, and you will see a castle hiding in the snow. This is Castle Sol, the hold of Commander Niall and the location for the left half of Haligtree Secret Medallion.
Descend the mountain to reach the castle, but don’t think this will be easy. You will find a lot of strong enemies on your way. You can choose to either run or fight them.
Yes, they are skeletons that arise out of the snowy grounds.
Further along the way, you will have to engage in a boss fight with the area boss – Death Rite Bird. Beware, as this boss can give you a severe Frostbite effect.
The Frostbite effect will make your Tarnished heavier and slow down your movements for a while. It might also lower your stamina.
But winning this boss fight will give you 77,000 Runes and Death Ritual Spear.
After you defeat the Death Rite Bird, head northeast, and you will find the Castle Sol Main Gate site of grace. Touch the grace and rest to recover your health.
Inside Castle Sol, you will have to battle many strong enemies right from you step into the castle. You will find mostly animal-based enemies in this castle – lions, eagles, and wolves.
You will find the Castle of the Eclipse site of grace inside the castle.
Then you will find the boss of the castle – Commander Niall. The boss will drop Veteran’s Prosthesis and 90,000 Runes.
You will have to fight the commander and his knights to proceed further into the castle.
After the gruesome fight with Commander Niall, rest at Castle Sol Rooftop site of grace to recover your health and put off the Frostbite effect, if any.
After resting, take the lift to move up to the guarding area of the castle.
At the top of Castle Sol, you will find the left half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion.
➡️ Location 3: Grand Lift of Rold (Hoisting the Secret Medallion)
Now that you have collected both halves of the Medallion, move ahead to the Forbidden Lands, a sub-region in the Mountaintops of the Giants region.
Here, you will find the Grand Lift of Rold.
When you arrive at the Grand Lift of Rold in Forbidden Lands, you will see an area with two massive statues guarding a gate. Head to the gate and stand in front of the statue.
When you reach the Grand Life of Rold, you will have to switch action to hoist the secret medallion. Only then can you open the hidden location of Malenia.
An animation will play, and you will see the two halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion opening the gates to a secret location that was not seen on the map.
Run straight into the Hidden Path to the Haligtree when the dungeon opens. You will have to go through the castle areas and fight some enemies.
Further, on the way, you will find a site of grace, rest there if you want and exit the dungeons. You will discover the hidden location – Consecrated Snowfield.
You have completed almost half the adventure it takes to reach Miquella’s Haligtree. Now, let’s see part two of this quest.
How to Complete the Puzzle and Reach Miquella’s Haligtree?
Now that you are in the Consecrated Snowfield, you need to complete a puzzle to unlock the waygate to Miquella’s Haligtree.
Let’s see how to do that.
➡️ Find the Consecrated Snowfield Map Fragment
First, you need to find the map fragment for Consecrated Snowfield. On the map, you will see a faint path and a blot. Follow that path to go to the blot.
Here, you will find the map fragment for Consecrated Snowfield.
➡️ Head to Ordina, Liturgical Town
Right where you find the map fragment, start heading north to find Ordina, Liturgical Town. Ordina is kind of a spooky but magical town, and you can’t enter from the main gate – as you can see in the image.
As you explore the area, you will find an entrance to an evergaol. The evergaol is present next to the statue of a cat-like figure holding an open book.
Enter the evergaol.
Entering the evergaol will change the area, and you will need to complete a puzzle to unlock Miquella’s Haligtree location.
➡️ Lighting the Four Flames (Puzzle to Unlock the Waygate to Haligtree)
In the evergaol version of Odina, you need to move as sneakily as possible. The Albinauric Archers in this place are really good at their skill and can hurt you from afar. The invisible Black Knife Assassins are a different hassle altogether.
I will share the locations of the four flames below. Aim to run from Flame to Flame as quickly as possible.
Note: If you die in the middle of the puzzle, you will respawn outside the evergaol. So, you will have to enter the evergaol again – no need to re-light the flame that you have already lit.
➡️ Flame 1
Head to the town square where the last statue and candle are sitting right there in the open. But beware, there’s an invisible Black Knife Assassin guarding it.
You can use Sentry’s Torch to see the assassins and kill them. Or, you can circumvent and light the first flame.
➡️ Flame 2
From Flame 1, head southwest. Take the stairs that lead to the town square and turn right to follow the building edges. You will find another statue with a Ghostflame Torch and a ladder here.
Climb the two ladders again to light the second candle.
➡️ Flame 3
For Flame 3, head east, and you will see some rooftops. A thin column connecting the two roofs is your next path. Jump on the roof and then head straight onto a slightly-higher roof.
You will see another Ghostflame Torch on the right. Take two ladders that lead up to the statue and light the Flame 3.
➡️ Flame 4
Head west and follow the sides of the buildings. You will find a Ghostflame Torch (it has a blueish flame) on a wall near a ladder leading up the side of one of these buildings.
Take the stairs to the top, and you’ll find the fourth flame there.
When you light all the flames, a message will pop up denoting that a seal has been broken in town. This means a Waygate has been activated in Ordina.
You will automatically exit the evergaol version and spawn at the entrance of the evergaol in Ordina.
➡️ Take the Waygate to Miquella’s Haligtree
Now, you have to do just one simple step, and you will discover the hidden location of Malenia – Miquella’s Haligtree.
At the evergaol entrance, on the east side, you will find long stairs that lead to a Waygate. Hit Yes when it asks if you want to travel to another location.
Here you are!
MIquella’s Haligtree, the hidden location in the Lands Between, that is governed by Miquella and Malenia.
How to Get to Malenia from Miquella’s Haligtree?
Now that you are at Miquella’s Haligtree, you are very close to the Sharbearer Malenia, one of the six demigods in Elden Ring and the hardest boss ever from FromSoftware.
Descend the tree and kill some enemies along the way. You will find a site of grace called Haligtree Town.
Explore the place a bit more, and you will find a hanging plaza that is connected by wooden bridges. There are a few mages at this plaza. Fight them or flee them – your choice.
Let me warn you – they are powerful!
On the left side of this plaza, you will find the boss of the area – Loretta Knight of the Haligtree. It took me 8 attempts to beat this boss, so just imagine how many attempts will be needed to beat Malenia!
Once you kill Loretta, you will get Loretta’s Mastery, Loretta’s War Sickle, and 200,000 Runes.
Take the downgoing stairs to Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. Malenia is located in this region.
Head west, and you will find the Prayer Room site of grace.
Head northeast to get to Malenia from the Prayer Room site of grace. You will find a downgoing ladder. Explore the area, kill some minor bosses, and loot the area for precious items.
You will find an important site of grace called Elphael Inner Wall. Elden Ring is one of the biggest open-world games, so getting lost in this Elphael region is easy due to its seemingly unending area.
Find a pool of Scarlet Rot. There is no other way; you have to get into the Rot and risk getting killed. However, I advise you to roll. This way, you can traverse the Rot pool faster without taking much Scarlet Rot damage.
At the end of the pool, you will find large Haligtree trunks. Use them to travel to the bottom of the castle.
Here, you will find an important site of grace – Drainage Channel. From the Drainage Channel site of grace, head east and then use the tree trunks to head north.
Jump the tree trunks to reach the Haligtree Roots site of grace. If you ask me, this is the most important site of grace in the entire Miquella’s Haligtree.
Now, you need to traverse the mist and be ready to fight one of the bosses that gives Elden Ring players nightmares!
You will find Malenia in a deep slumber but wakes up when you step into her arena. And an intense cutscene begins, which ends with this.
“I am Malenia. Blade of Miquella.
And I have never known defeat.”
Fighting Malenia, the Blade of Miquella, is optional. I highly recommend that if you choose to fight her, you should be at level 200+; otherwise, you won’t even last a few seconds in front of her.
The fight with Malenia will be DIFFICULT because it’s a two-phase fight. Also, she can heal herself by inflicting damage on you. So, with each of her hits, she will regain her health. Guarding is pointless here because she can still heal by striking your shield.
Malenia is not weak to Scarlet Rot (since she is the Goddess of Rot) but weak to Frostbite and Fire status effects, so you can try using them while fighting her.
