AO Tennis

AO Tennis is the most realistic and comprehensive tennis game on PS4. It has the official license of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, and features many professional players, such as Rafael Nadal and Angelique Kerber, and licensed tennis stadia, such as Rod Laver Arena.

YouTube video

The gameplay of AO Tennis is very realistic and challenging. You must master different shots, such as topspin, slice, lob, and drop shots, and use them wisely according to the situation. You must also pay attention to your stamina, your opponent’s style, and the court surface.

The game has a realistic physics engine that simulates the ball’s trajectory, bounce, and spin. You can choose the surface of choice, like hard or grass; each has a distinct play style and presents different challenges.

The developer says it used AI to develop the gameplay based on ten years of ball-tracking data from Australian Open championship matches. The result is that the players behave as they would in real life.

You can also download hundreds of players. Players created can be uploaded onto Big Ant Studio’s servers for full cross-platform downloads on PlayStation 4 and other platforms.

One thing I liked about the gameplay is that we get comprehensive clothing, stadium, and logo creators to create the environment and players according to our liking.

The game also has an impressive and solid career mode, where you can start from the bottom and work your way up to the top of the world rankings. Plus, you also get online play.

AO Tennis 2

AO Tennis 2 is a much-improved sequel to the first AO Tennis, which was released in 2018. Developed by Big Ant Studios and published by Nacon, AO Tennis 2 is the official game of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year.

I was eager to try out AO Tennis 2 and see how it compares to its predecessor, which was not bad either, in graphics and presentation. I was pleasantly surprised by the changes and enhancements that the developers have made, making AO Tennis 2 a much more enjoyable and realistic tennis simulation.

YouTube video

One of the biggest improvements is the Career Mode, which now features a story-driven narrative that adds personality and context to your journey as a tennis pro. You have to manage not only your performance on the court but also your off-court activities, such as press conferences, sponsorships, and relationships with your team and other players.

You also have to earn money and experience that can be used to improve your skills and stats, as well as hire staff that can help you with your training, fitness, and recovery. The Career Mode is quite immersive and challenging, making you feel like you are living the life of a tennis star.

The multiplayer mode is fun and competitive, allowing you to test your skills and strategies against other human opponents. This makes it one of the best PS4 multiplayer games available on the market right now!

One of the best features of AO Tennis 2 is the ability to download and use custom players and venues created by the community. Thanks to the powerful creation tools, you can access a huge variety of user-generated content, such as unlicensed players, stadiums, and logos.

You can also create your content and share it with others. This feature adds a lot of diversity and realism to the game and makes up for the lack of official licenses for other major tournaments and players.

Hot Shots Tennis

Everybody’s Tennis, also called Hot Shots Tennis, depending on where you live, is a PS2 game by Clap Hanz and Sony, and it is part of the Everybody’s Golf series. It was ported to PS4 in 2016.

YouTube video

The game is fun and easy to play, but it also has a lot of depth and content. It has 14 characters, 5 umpires, and 11 courts, and they are all very colorful and charming.

The characters have different skills and personalities, and some of them are from previous games of the series. I liked playing Suzuki, who is fast and agile, and Gloria, who is very powerful and confident.

The game has 3 modes: Challenge, Tennis with Everybody, and Training. In the Challenge, I had to beat computer players to unlock new costumes and courts. It was quite challenging but also rewarding.

Matchpoint: Tennis Championships

Matchpoint: Tennis Championships features Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios, who is known for his rebellious and non-conformist attitude towards the sport of tennis. While his presence on the game’s cover suggests that the game will be a fresh and innovative addition to the tennis genre, the actual gameplay experience is far from that expectation.

YouTube video

Developed by Torus Games, Matchpoint has a smooth and polished style of play, but it lacks balance and inspiration. The career mode is dull and unimpressive, and the multiplayer support is surprisingly limited.

The game fails to live up to the potential that was expected of it, despite featuring one of the most controversial and talked-about tennis players of our time.

I find that Matchpoint has a user-friendly control setup that makes it easy to learn. Your player’s movements are automatically guided to the ideal position, which enables you to focus solely on your opponent’s side of the court. You can execute a standard array of tennis shots with a level of accuracy that is impressive.

However, the system is too easy to master since little risk is involved. The timing window for your shots is very generous, and you are not penalized for overcooking a shot or serve.

It’s rare to hit the ball outside the lines, and you can easily pull off crosscourt shots at impossible angles. I feel like a well-trained tennis player, but the rallies lack tension, making the game easy on the go.

Tennis World Tour 2

YouTube video

Tennis World Tour 2 is a complete tennis game that delivers rich content and is enjoyable to play. The previous game suffered from incorrect animations, leading to unpredictable and inconsistent gameplay. However, the animation system in this sequel is well done and a clear improvement from the past.

The game also introduces a new serving system, allowing players to decide their shot’s angle and timing during game exchanges. Each shot requires precision, and mistiming can significantly impact the outcome. Visual feedback is provided to help players calibrate their timing.

The improvements in gameplay and code cleanliness are evident from the start, and new modes, such as Tie Break Tens, have been added to the game. While visually, the game may not meet the standards of recent sports games, Tennis World Tour 2 is a great new beginning and a glimmer of hope for the future of tennis in the video game market.

With more animations, strokes, and a faster pace, players can experience dynamic, realistic, and precise gameplay that puts them in the heart of legendary rallies.

Super Tennis Blast

Super Tennis Blast is an arcade game. The game differs from other tennis games in that it does not allow you to recreate famous Wimbledon finals with well-known tennis players such as Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, or Rafael Nadal.

Instead, the focus of the game is on accessibility to all. The game features relatively normal-looking human characters and a colorful, cartoon-like depiction of tennis, similar to Mario Tennis.

YouTube video

As you become familiar with the different types of serves and returns, you’ll quickly learn to use the most effective shots to gain an edge over your opponent. The tutorial helps to ease you into the game, and the different modes available gradually increase in difficulty, allowing you to improve at a steady pace.

Unlike other tennis games, there are no random powerups or special moves to worry about, making this a game purely based on real-life tennis. You and your opponents can’t use cheap tricks or special abilities to trip each other up, making it a fair and enjoyable experience for all players.

Timber Tennis: Versus

Timber Tennis: Versus may not be a tennis simulator you want to take seriously. It is a game with simple mechanics and a simple price tag. Although it boasts a nice pixel aesthetic, the shallow gameplay and dearth of content take the little fun on offer quickly. Furthermore, the absence of other players in its online component is disappointing.

YouTube video

However, it is worth noting that the developers have made considerable effort to make the package as comprehensive as possible.

Compared to its predecessor, Timberman Vs, there is at least more to do than mash a single button. While it may not be an essential game, it is passable for very short bursts of play. This is a PS4 indie game that you might want to try!

Dream Match Tennis VR

This tennis game on PSVR is called Dream Match Tennis, and I have to say, it’s a blast. The physics and tracking are on point, and the AI is challenging enough to keep things interesting. You will love how immersive it feels.

YouTube video

I played it once at my friend’s PSVR, and I found myself feeling like a real tennis player after playing it for a while. There weren’t too many courts and umpire voices, and the tracking can be a bit wonky at times, but overall, it’s a great game.

I think it would be amazing if Bimboosoft brought this game to PSVR2. As a fan of sports games, I think they’re some of the best ways to incorporate VR into gaming, and Dream Match Tennis is no exception. If you’re a fan of tennis or just looking for a fun PS VR game, I recommend giving this one a try.

In conclusion, while there aren’t many tennis games available on PS4, there are still a few options for tennis enthusiasts. The games vary in terms of realism, gameplay, and features, but they all offer an enjoyable experience for players.

Whether you prefer a realistic simulation like AO Tennis or a more arcade-style game like Super Tennis Blast, there is a game available to suit your preferences. So, grab your controller and get ready to experience the excitement of tennis on your PS4!
