For an outsider, the word ‘Samurai’ forms part of a common introduction to Japan, the oriental nation, also known as the Land of the Rising Sun. The samurai culture has been of much intrigue and interest to Westerners and non-Japanese in general. As such, multiple industries, including the video game industry, have taken great inspiration from it. This is evident with the recent popularity of Samurai games on PS5 and other major consoles!
For the ones not in the know (though we doubt it), the word ‘Samurai’ refers to the warrior class in old Japan. It has found its way into popular culture as well with books (‘Cloud of Sparrow’, ‘Tales of the Otori’), films by renowned directors Akira Kurosawa and Edward Zwick, and of course, video games.

The Popularity of the Samurai in Video Games Industry
Over the years, it has been seen that the samurai can work well with a lot of video game genres. For example, they are central characters in third person open-world games like Ghost of Tsushima and side-scrolling action-adventure titles like Trek To Yomi. You want your own team featuring the samurai versus another team or want single-player battles against warrior classes that are not from Japan, you can go play For Honor.
If you want real-time stealth-based tactical games where you get to control a group of warriors to complete a specific mission, there is Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. In this game, you control five assassins with unique skillsets.
Japan is a playable faction in Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties, so you got the RTS (real time strategy) genre covered too.
For people who would love to see large scale battles on the screen, there are turn-based real-time strategy games entirely devoted to the samurai clans like Total War: Shogun 2.
For deep, personal stories built around actual historical events, you can live the life of Jin Sakai (or the ‘Ghost’) in Ghost of Tsushima who sees his brethren losing to the Mongols and the island of Tsushima being taken by the Mongol warlord Khotun Khan. In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, you actually play as a shinobi but your antagonist is a whole samurai clan. Though Elden Ring is not a samurai game, you’ll find a well-rounded character class of Samurai in it.
If you are already enamored of the samurai and/or wish to live as them in a video game, then we have some excellent recommendations for you. Here are the best samurai games you can play on PS5.
