In the rot-infested lands of Caelid lies a giant sleeping dragon called Greyoll. In the Lands Between, there are many dragons that the Tarnished will come across, but this sleeping dragon is special.
If you kill the sleeping dragon Greyoll, you have an amazing opportunity to farm a sureshot amount of 50,000 Runes. And not just that, you also get 5 Dragon Hearts.
You can encounter and defeat this Greyoll early in the game, and 50,000 Runes early in the game can help you instantly level up to at least level 30. You can easily buy items and defeat bosses with upgraded equipment.
There are chances that you will encounter the sleeping dragon in Ranni the Witch’s storyline if you head on to find and defeat Starscourge Radahn, a Legend Boss in Elden Ring.
But today, we are not focusing on the storyline but on how to kill the sleeping dragon Greyoll. Before you do that, there are a few things you need to know about the dragon and how to find her.
In this guide, I will tell you about the sleeping dragon’s location, how to farm more Runes by using some tricks, and the fastest way to kill the sleeping dragon in the world of Elden Ring.
The Sleeping Dragon Greyoll
According to the Elden Ring lore,
“Greyoll was the mother of all dragons, dwarfing all who stood before her like a looming mountain.”
Greyoll is described as the mother of all dragons in Lands Between, which makes sense as her anatomy closely matches all the major dragons, such as Greyll, Smarag, and Agheel.
The sleeping dragon Greyoll’s thundering shriek – aka Greyoll’s Roar – weakens the Tarnished and strengthens nearby dragons around her, but she is incapable of doing any more than that.
Defeating Greyoll does not just give you Runes and Dragon Hearts, but the victory also unlocks Greyoll’s Roar for purchase.
Sleeping Dragon Elden Ring Location
You will find the sleeping dragon Greyoll in Dragonbarrow, the northernmost part of Caelid. The sleeping dragon lies west of Fort Faroth.
The easiest way to reach Fort Fareth is to fast-travel to the Third Church of Marika. The church is located in Limgrave East.
Note: You must unlock Mistwood first by collecting all of the Limgrave map fragments.
Now, you can use the Waygate near the Third Church of Marika in Mistwood.
After entering the Waygate, you’ll reach the Bestial Sanctum in Dragonbarrow. You will see a Boss right in front of you. The fight is optional, so I suggest that you do not engage.
Slip through the Boss’s gaze and head southeast. Travel the bridge which has the flying dragon Greyll on it. Again, this fight is optional, so I suggest do not engage with Greyll.
On your path, you will come across a giant Erdtree with a Spirit Spring next to it. Use the spring to get to the cliff, and keep heading to Fort Faroth.
You will reach Fort Faroth.
You can either rest at Fort Faroth’s Site of Grace to recover your strength or head directly to kill the sleeping dragon. On your left, you will see the sleeping dragon Greyoll.
In Elden Ring’s open world, Caelid is a region that’s considered the most brutal battleground. It houses many dangerous enemies that can kill you in seconds, no matter what is your build level. Hence, do not engage in any boss fights.
How to Kill the Sleeping Dragon Greyoll in Elden Ring?
To kill the sleeping dragon Greyoll, head towards it on your steed and start attacking its left side. The scales of the sleeping dragons are thick, and it will take a few minutes to drain its Health Pool of 87,664.
Just keep attacking the sleeping dragon with your weapon; eventually, it will vanish into thin air, giving you 5 Dragon Hearts, 50,000 Runes, and access to Greyoll’s Roar.
Elden Ring is known for its adventure, and if you want to up the ante, you can fight the 5 baby dragons surrounding Greyoll. The lives of these baby dragons and Greyoll are connected.
You kill the baby dragons, and Greyoll dies too. You kill Greyoll, and the baby dragons die as well. However, this way, you will get lesser Runes, as one baby dragon only drops around 9,000 Runes.
If you kill the sleeping dragon Greyoll directly, you get a sureshot amount of 50,000 Runes. If you want more than that, then use Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot or Golden Scarab Talisman.
Things You Need to Kill the Sleeping Dragon
Although you can head directly for the sleeping dragon, there are a few things that you need to kill Greyoll easily. Let’s look at what you need before you kill the sleeping dragon in Elden Ring.
➡️ Torrent
Torrent is your steed in Elden Ring and your companion throughout the Lands Between once you unlock it in Limgrave after you find Melina.
Melina will ask you a question, and you should accept. Once accepted, she will give you Torrent, a strong and reliable horse-ram hybrid. With Torrent, you can travel much faster and avoid enemies by sneaking past them.
Why do you need Torrent when killing Greyoll?
As you head to kill the sleeping dragon, make sure you are on Torrent. When the dragon is about to vanish (you will see it twitch), run back to Fort Faroth’s site of grace. You only have a few seconds to traverse this distance, and thus riding on Torrent will be helpful.
If you time this right, you will get your 50,000 Runes, and Greyoll will still be there. You can re-do the entire process and collect more Runes repeatedly.
➡️ Weapons That Cause Hemorrhage
You can kill Greyoll using any weapon, but Bleed Weapons are the best.
With Greyoll’s incredible health pool, I suggest you use a bleed weapon such as Greatsword or Longsword to expedite the process. Each time a Bleed status effect happens, it will take away a percentage of Greyoll’s health. Other weapons will take you a lot longer.
If you’re playing as a Samurai class, the Tarnished will be equipped with Uchigatana, a bleed Katana. You can also use Reduvia Dagger once you kill Bloody Finger Nerijus and obtain the dagger.
➡️ Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot and Golden Scarab Talisman (Optional)
There are two ways to boost rune acquisition in Elden Ring:
- Golden Scarab Talisman – 20% increase
- Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot – 30% increase
#1. Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot
To get Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot, you can purchase them from Patches or cook them using Missionary’s Cookbook. Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot is rare, as only a few are scattered across Lands Between. They boost Runes by 30% for 3 minutes.
Early in the game, you can find one in West Limgrave. Head to the east, and you’ll reach a lake. On the south side of the lake, there’s a road. Take to the road leading to a hill northeast of the lake. On this hill, you will find a Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot.
#2. Golden Scarab Talisman
The Golden Scarab Talisman increases acquired Runes by 20%, so you can get 60,000 Runes by killing the sleeping dragon in Elden Ring. You will find this Talisman in Caelid when Cleanrot Knight Duo drops the Talisman in the Abandoned Cave.
Abandoned Cave is located to the east of Smoldering Wall’s site of lost grace. Use Torrent to jump on the tree branches and land on the Abandoned Cave. Be careful; the Cave is filled with Scarlet Rot pools.
Now, follow these instructions:
- Light the bonfire and jump into the Rot pool below.
- Head north to find the Summon Pool Statue.
- Jump from the edge.
- Enter the tunnel, and you will find a large area with a Giant Miranda Sprout.
- Turn northeast and climb onto another tunnel.
- At the end of this tunnel, you will find the Cleanrot Knight Duo.
Having these Runes-boosting items is optional. When I first killed the sleeping dragon, I didn’t have them. But it’s up to you.
Conclusion: Should You Kill the Sleeping Dragon Greyoll in Elden Ring?
Killing Greyoll is not a part of the main storyline. It has no associated quests or outcomes – so it’s up to the player whether to kill the sleeping dragon or not.
Many players have raised the question of morality over killing Greyoll, as the dragon is essentially harmless and doesn’t even fight back when attacked. Also, gaining 50,000 Runes and 5 Dragon Hearts early in the game can refrain you from leveling up as the game wants you to – slowly and after completing the challenges.
So, it all depends on your playing style. I say there’s no harm in killing Greyoll as the dragon is already suffering due to its Scarlet Rot infection. So by killing her, you are essentially ending her misery.
Also, 50,000 Runes, 5 Dragon Hearts, and access to Greyoll’s Roar early in the game can help you beat enemies in a game that is known for its tough boss fights.
