A Plague Tale: Requiem, the sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence, launched last year and, just like its predecessor, received positive critical reception. It became a commercial success, too, with over 1 million copies sold after a fortnight of its release, as noted by publisher Focus Entertainment on Twitter.
The third-person action-adventure game featuring the siblings Amicia and Hugo soon got Steam Deck verified. It also received 60FPS support for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
Now, it looks like Asobo Studio, the game developer of A Plague Tale games, is looking to expand the franchise. Asobo is a French indie video game developer that’s also known for making Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), besides A Plague Tale games.
Job Listings Appear for ‘Plague Team’
This can be inferred from a slew of job listings on the developer’s website. The Asobo creative team is hiring for multiple roles for the ‘Plague Team’. In a few of the listings (like Senior Game Designer M/F), the studio has mentioned that it would be a plus if the applicant has played A Plague Tale: Innocence and/or Requiem.
In the same job listing, Asobo also says that they are “looking for a Game Designer to strengthen the team behind ‘A Plague Tale: Requiem’ from the pre-production phase.”
So, it is clear that they want to make a new game set in the A Plague Tale universe.
Asobo also posted about the new openings on LinkedIn.
It may be some time before they actually announce a new entry in the series. A lot of factors ride on a game between its conception and reaching completion in development, and we can’t say anything for sure now, except that the intent is surely there for a new A Plague Tale game.
Next Asobo Studio Game
Asobo Studio is also working on its next Microsoft Flight Simulator game, titled Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The game was announced in June this year. The various requirements include those for Data Scientist H/F, Lead Programmer UI H/F, Autopilot Programmer H/F, and more.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is expected to launch on Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Windows 10, Windows 11, and Steam. The game is expected to launch in 2024.
Our Take
With A Plague Tale games, Asobo Studio has shown that people dig role-playing games heavy on storyline and emotional connection. Also, since the major event ruling everyone’s destiny in these games is a plague in the middle ages, it is heartening to know that such an offbeat theme was lapped up by players the world over. Not to mention that the protagonists were just kids trying to stay alive in a harsh world.
With two back-to-back successes, it is quite pragmatic for Asobo Studio to carry on and expand the game universe with another title. We hope that they come up with another stellar entry.
